International Planned Parenthood Federation Honours Fayemi’s Wife, Others

The International Planned Parenthood Federation Africa Region has honoured the wife of Ekiti State Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, and the two co-founders of the African Women’s Development Fund with the Philanthropy Awards.

A statement by the AWDF Programme Officer for Communications, Ms Nana Sekyiamah, said the awardees were decorated during the 60th
anniversary gala of the IPPFAR, held in South Africa, on Tuesday. Other recipients of the IPPFAR awards are Head of Mission, Medica Mondiale, Liberia, Ms. Joana Foster and Executive Director of Mentoring and Empowerment Programme for Young Women, Dr Hilda Tadria.
Quoting the IPPFAR, Sekyiamah said, “Philanthropy Awards recognises the work of individuals and institutions that are actively impacting communities and women’s development on the continent through philanthropy and community engagement.”

In 2000, Erelu Bisi Fayemi and the two other awardees co-founded the AWDF, the first African-wide grant-making fund, which supports the
work of organizations promoting women’s right and empowerment in Africa.
Medica Mondiale is a NGO offering psycho-social assistance to Liberian refugees, as well as advocacy for women on sexual and gender-based violence and legal assistance for traumatized women.
The Chief Executive Officer of AWDF, Ms Theo Sowa, said of the award, “We are delighted that the pioneering work of the three co-founders of AWDF is being recognised by IPPF-AR.
“It is important to celebrate the individuals and institutions that are working so hard to move this continent forward.
“Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi, Joana Foster and Hilda Tadria are powerful symbols of the change that African women are leading throughout their communities and on the continent today.”

IPPFAR is one of Africa’s leading NGO working in reproductive health and rights, providing a wide range of sexual and reproductive health services and information to men and women from diverse social and economic backgrounds.
It has a network of member associations in 44 countries in sub-Sahara Africa with a vision of “an African society where every child is a wanted child, every person enjoys good health, and men, women and youth live free from HIV/AIDS.”
