Provision of car and housing loans, special grants for teachers deployed to rural areas and regular training programmes are parts of incentives announced by Ekiti State government at the weekend for teachers in public schools.
Besides, the government said it has a plan to offer a two-bedroom bungalow for any teacher and education manager posted to the hinterlands.
The incentives were announced by the Deputy Governor, Prof Modupe Adelabu and Education Commissioner, Mr Kehinde Ojo, at the flagging of the yearly training programme for some 2,500 teachers in the three senatorial districts.
According to the duo, officials of the World Bank are due in the state this week for the inauguration of 10 per cent rural allowance incentive for teachers.
They said the implementation of the scheme will take effect from next January.
Breaking the cheery news, Prof Adelabu said Governor Kayode Fayemi has approved car and housing loans for the teachers and that a committee has been raised to appraise their promotion.
She explained that the training was organized by SUBEB to enable the teachers sharpen the skills in modern approach of teaching core subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, in line with the UBEC directive.
The twice-weekly training, according to her, would be on for 10 contact days, pointing out that the teachers are to assemble at the designated centres in the three Senatorial districts’ headquarters of Ado-Ekiti, Ikole-Ekiti and Ikere-Ekiti on Thursdays and Fridays.
Two UBEC Commissioners – Mr Bunmi Awotikun and Mrs Bunmi Awolugba had earlier represented the deputy governor in Ikole-Ekiti and Ikere-Ekiti, to launch the training programme in the two other senatorial zones.
She urged them to take advantage of the training for the state to keep its status as the Fountain of Knowledge, stating that everything possible must be done to preserve, education, which she identified as the industry of the state.
The deputy governor noted that the training would allow teachers to exchange ideas on the new ways of imparting knowledge unto pupils.
Also speaking, the Education, Science & Technology Commissioner said the rural allowance scheme for teachers will be launched this week by the state government in collaboration with the World Bank, adding that the implementation will commence in January next year.
Mr Ojo list Anambra, Bauchi and Ekiti as the three states benefitting from the World Bank programme for teachers posted to rural areas.
