The Ekiti State Government has expended over N190 million on health intervention for people who are financially incapable to get medical treatment for their ailments.
The State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi made this known in Ado Ekiti on Monday while distributing cheques totalling N33,339,600 to 58 persons to attend to their medical conditions.
Dr. Fayemi who recalled that a sum of N21 million was disbursed to 51 persons earlier in April to enable them access various secondary and tertiary healthcare services within and outside the country. He stated that the integrated interventions of the administration is yielding good results as the life expectancy of the Ekiti people is 55 years, the highest in Nigeria.
He assured that government would not relent in its commitment to the wellbeing of the citizens.
While stressing that his administration is conscious of the needs of the people, the Governor said government has consistently demonstrated this with the design and implementation of several programmes and policies aimed at ensuring that no Ekiti person is left behind due to lack of access to basic welfare and healthcare”.
Fayemi highlighted other steps of the administration to fortifying the health sector to include the adoption of the National Health Insurance Scheme programme which is to help broaden the scope of beneficiaries of the free health programme from which 500,000 people have benefited.
“Also the Adunni Olayinka Memorial Diagnostic and Wellness Centre was recently opened at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital to ensure we prevent as many deaths as possible through the early detection and treatment of cancers. There is no gain saying that this administration is fully committed to our healthcare agenda and is dedicated to protecting our people from various diseases, to make them not only healthy but also more productive, thus improving the economic prospects of our state”, he stated.
In his remarks, one of the beneficiaries, Mr Akin Aruleba, thanked the Governor for the intervention, saying that the intervention has given a new life to the beneficiaries who had lost hope of regaining their healthy state after being affected by a natural disaster.
The event was attended by the Deputy Governor, Prof. Modupe Adelabu, members of the State Executive Council especially the Commissioner for Health! Prof. Olusola Fasubaa, and the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe among others.
