Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has described the death of pro-democracy activist and human rights campaigner, Baba Omojola, as a big loss to democracy in Nigeria.
Dr. Fayemi in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olayinka Oyebode, described Omojola as one of the champions of democracy being enjoyed in the country.
He noted that Omojola stood out to be counted among patriotic Nigerians who worked tirelessly to chase the military usurpers out of corridors of power.
Describing Omojola as a dogged fighter whose commitment to revolutionary change in the country is unparallel. He said the Omojola pursued the cause he believed in, stressing that the deceased encouraged younger elements in the struggle to enthrone democracy.
The Governor pointed out that Omojola gave inspiration to him (Fayemi) and other activists in the heat of the battle to revalidate the result of the June12 1993 election.
He said, “Baba played a prominent role in the struggle to revalidate the result of the June 12 1993 election won by Chief MKO Abiola.
“He was everywhere-on the streets, at press conferences, meetings and other for a to demand the return of the people’s mandate. This great man further showed the stuff he was made of during the dark days of the Abacha junta. He personally led street protests in Lagosa and other cities demanding early return to democracy.
“Even after democracy had been restored, Baba Omojola kept up the struggle to save the common man from anti-people policies of the successive administrations.
“His death has depleted the ranks of committed democrats and selfless patriots who toiled to give us the democracy we all now enjoy”.
