Students under the aegis of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Ekiti State axis have applauded recent approval of instalmental payment of school fees for students of State University (EKSU) by the state Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi .
The students who stormed the Governor’s office at Oke Bareke, Ado -Ekiti on Tuesday, expressed their gratitude to Governor Fayemi who intervened in the “No school fee, no lecture policy” of the university, which culminated in a faceoff that led to the closure of the school four weeks. They said the Governor, through his intervention, has further demonstrated his commitment to education.
Governor Fayemi , who is the Visitor to the institution, had earlier in the week, advised the authorities of the university to allow the students pay their school fees in instalments in view of the economic situation in the country. He also urged the students to reciprocate the gesture by complying with the arrangements put in place by the university authorities for the instalmental payment.
Speaking on behalf of the students, the Chairman of the body in Ekiti State, Comrade Damilare Bewaji, said NANS was not surprised that the Governor introduced the policy of payment by instalments which is the first of its kind in the history of the State, in view of his reputation as a right activist and a compassionate leader.
They also highlighted the various developments in the education sector of the state, which according to them are fast repositioning education in Ekiti state.
The students brandished placards with different inscriptions including “Ride on people’s Governor”, “Fayemi thanks for Your intervention”, “yes to instalmental payment”, “Salute to Comrade Governor Fayemi” etc
The students’ body also felicitated with Fayemi on his victory at the Supreme Court adding that the verdict had attested to the sanctity of the mandate given him by the Ekiti people in 2007.
The verdict, they said, has helped in ensuring that the various developments in the State did not come to an abrupt end.
Receiving the students on behalf of Governor Fayemi, the Chief of Staff to the governor, Mr Yemi Adaramodu and Special Adviser, Governor’s Office, Chief Biodun Akin- Fasae, said Fayemi has been true to his promises to transform the education sector as seen in the various programmes in the sector.
Adaramodu who saluted the students for being appreciative of the government’s gesture, said aside the reduction in tuition fee in October a, Fayemi’s recent approval of instalmental payment shows that the Governor shares the feelings of the students as well as their parents.
He assured that the Governor would not renege on his promises to pay bursaries and scholarships as and when due.
He urged the students not to allow themselves to be used as political thugs as they are potential leaders who should live honourably.
