A call has gone to the 16 Local Government Chairmen in Ekiti State to ensure strict adherence to the rules guiding fiscal transactions in their councils with a view to ensuring fiscal responsibility.
The Chairman of the Ekiti State Fiscal Responsibility Commission, Mr. Bayo Aina made this call during the Commission’s awareness visit to all the Local Government Councils in the State.
Mr. Aina charged the Council Chairmen to always prepare realistic budgets that could easily be implemented, adding that, this will eradicate cases of abandoned projects and ensure continuity in all facets of administration at the Local Government level.
The Chairman who also advised the local government chairmen to promote transparency, prudence and effective financial management framework in the local government, stressed that the Commission would monitor and enforce the provision of the law in budget preparation, implementation and evaluation.
He explained that the commission embarked on the advocacy visits to the Councils because Local Councils are closer to the people and they has a tremendous capacity to impact positively on the life’s of the people when things are done properly.
In their reactions during the visits, the 16 Local government Chairmen assured that they will comply with the fiscal responsibility law of the State and urged the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development to promptly consider and approve financial requests of Local Government Councils to eliminate unnecessary delay in the execution of their laudable programme.
The Onigede of Igede-Ekiti, Oba James Aladesuru who was in attendance during the awareness visit to Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Council, explained that lack of prudence, openness and transparency, leads to inability of government to execute programmes and policiesthat would have direct impact on the people.
