Security operatives attached to the convoy of the wife of Ekiti State Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, on Friday dislodged armed bandits who laid siege on the Ogere end of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
Before the arrival of the governor’s wife convoy on the scene around 3.15pm, it was learnt that the gang had operated unhindered for
several hours and disposed some motorists and commuters of valuables.
The First Lady was returning to Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, after attending the burial service of the Father of Senator Tokunbo
Afikuyomi, in Lagos, when the incident happened.
The bandits had fled into the bush following sporadic gun shots released into the air by the combined team of security operatives.
The convoy left the scene after about fifteen minutes of gun shots, with the rescued vehicles in tow amidst thunderous ovation for
the bravery of the security men.
Some of the commuters, who narrated their ordeal in muffled tones, said that they were forced to duck under their vehicles while the
operation lasted. Some drivers that also got the information in time had made a quick U-turn, which led to accidents on the road.
Traffic on the other end of the road had been observed to be unusually light, while it was noticed that there was a snarl up on the road
leading to Ibadan.
