Women Affairs Commissioner Solicits caretaker Chairmen Support

Ekiti State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Social Development and Gender Empowerment, Mrs. Fola Richie –Adewusi has solicited the support of Local Government Caretaker Chairmen in the State for the implementation of the Child Rights’ Law, Gender-Based Violence (Prohibition) Law and the law against Female Genital Mutilation at the grassroots.

Speaking during an advocacy visit  to  the Headquarters of each Local Government Councils in the State, Mrs. Richie-Adewusi noted that the Local Councils have key roles to play in enforcing the laws and ensuring its effectiveness among the people.

She urged the Council Bosses to begin sensitizing  the people on the need to abide by the laws which protect the rights of both male and female at every fora stressing that violators would be sanctioned.

Ritche-Adewusi who noted that children have the rights to education, explained that, with the free education being introduced in Ekiti State by Governor Fayemi- led administration, no parent should hinder their wards from going to school , adding that parents of any child found roaming the streets or hawking during school hours would be sanctioned.

The Commissioner advocated for sponsorship of programmes that would improve the lives of women, adding that her ministry was planning to collaborate with the Local Government Councils to establish skill acquisition centres in the three senatorial districts where women could acquire skills in different areas to empower themselves economically.

She also solicited for a befitting Women Development Centres in all the Local Government Councils where women could interact.

Mrs. Adewusi urged parents to encourage the youth to take advantage of the various programmes put in place by the present administration such as the ‘Youth in Commercial Agriculture’ to develop themselves saying, Government was ready to empower youths who are interested in mechanized farming.

She advised the women to organise themselves into cooperative groups to enable them obtain micro-credit loans to boost their economy.

Two of the Care-taker Chairmen, Hon. Tosin Olotu from Emure LG and Hon. Adekamimo Kayode from Ikere Local Government who spoke during the visits assured the Commissioner of their unflinching support, saying they were committed to promoting gender empowerment as one of the 8- point agenda of the present administration.
