62 patients referred to Specialist Hospitals for further treatment and surgical operations during the 6th edition of Governor Fayemi’s free health mission in Ekiti South Senatorial District and some parts of Ekiti Central Senatorial District had undergone successful surgical operations.
The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Olusola Fasubaa who made this known in Ado-Ekiti, said that the successful operations were conducted free of charge at the state specialists’ Hospital, Ikere and General Hospital, Ijan Ekiti between December 18 and 19, 2012.
Prof. Fasubaa said that forty patients were operated upon at the Ikere Specialists’ Hospital for hernia, lipomas and other swelling in the Centerior abdominal wall while twenty others were treated at the Ijan General Hospital.
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Dare Ojo lauded the free health intervention of the Fayemi led administration and expressed satisfaction with the entire programme. According to him, there was no recorded complication throughout the surgical treatment of the patients.
The Permanent Secretary however enjoined people in the state not to handle their health with levity, stressing the need for them to go for regular medical check-ups to prevent avoidable death.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Kolawole Aina who was part of the medical team that handled the operations, said that the exercise was done professionally and competently.
One of the beneficiaries of the programme, 75 year old Mr. Remijose Jegede expressed gratitude to Governor Fayemi for what he described as their rescue at a crucial time when there was no money for the treatment they received.
According to him, he had been suffering from chronic hernia for over 5 years, adding that he had been previously charged a sum of thirty thousand naira for the same operation but had no money to pay. Pa Jegede said the free health mission was a life saver.
