Sports Council Boss Commends Ekiti Athletes At EKO 2012

The Chairman of Ekiti state Sports Council, Prince Ademola Adetola has commended the state’s contingent to the just concluded 18th National Sports Festival tagged ‘Eko 2012’.
Prince Adetola while addressing the delegate shortly after their arrival from Lagos rated the performance of the state athletes in the festival above that of last edition held in Port-Harcourt.

He stressed that the five gold medals won by the state was an improvement on their performance in Port-Harcourt where the State earned four gold medals and ranked in the 20th position.

The Chairman congratulated the athletes and the officials for their good conduct during the 12-day sports fiesta and particularly expressed appreciation to the medalists for bringing honour to the state.
Adetola also expressed gratitude to Governor Kayode Fayemi for giving the required support to the state contingent in the sports fiesta saying that the efforts of the state government in grassroots sports development have started to yield good fruits.

About 8,095 athletes across Nigeria competed in 25 sports and 450 events while 11,549 people including officials were accredited for the games.
The final medal table showed Delta State as the overall winner of the competition with 114 gold, 99 silver and 75 bronze, Rivers State came second with 76 gold, 71 silver and 70 bronze while Lagos was third with 64 gold 47 silver and 71 bronzes.
Ekiti state was in the 15th position with 5 gold, 1 silver and 10 bronze medals while Katsina placed last among the 36 states and the Federal capital Territory.

Meanwhile, Cross River State has been given the hosting right of the next edition of the festival scheduled for year 2014.
