Citizens’ Welfare: It Is Irresponsibility For States To Wait For FG

November 26, 2012

Given the slow response of the Federal Government to some of its responsibilities to the citizens, Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi has said that it would be irresponsible of any state government to wait for the Federal Government  before acting.

The Governor stated this against the backdrop of difficulties faced by state governments in accessing some major developmental funds, especially the ecological fund.

Governor  Fayemi who visited some channelization projects in communities that are prone to flooding in Ado Ekiti, the state capital  on Saturday, said any state that cannot pull the strings might find it hard to access the fund.

He said that Ekiti State cannot continue to wait to access the fund before taking positive steps that would save the lives.

While stressing that state governments also take responsibility for federal roads, the Governor said  citizens are only interested in seeing their roads tarred regardless of whether it is the responsibility of state or federal government.

On the channelization projects, Fayemi expressed satisfaction with the relief that the execution of the projects have brought to the communities.
He added that affected areas which include Omisanjana,  Embassy Island in Moferere and Mercyland in Ita Eku have been largely abandoned by previous administrations hence the erection of structures along waterways.
Governor  Fayemi stressed that the commitment of his administration to the welfare of the citizens necessitated the gesture; adding that the government cannot put up insecurity of lives and property of the citizenry.

Speaking on behalf of landlords in Embassy Island, Engr Ola Rotimi said the effort of the Fayemi-led administration in the area is unprecedented, adding that the intervention of the government had prevented the areas from being flooded this year. He praised the governor for showing  commitment to the well being of the citizens.
