Ekiti State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Eniola Ajayi has warned Secondary School Students against the misuse of the laptop computers provided for them by the State Government. The Commissioner who gave the warning at a meeting with the School Principals and the Area Education Officers in Ado, said reports reaching her office indicate that some of the pupils were using the computers to watch pornographic materials, play games and to listen to music to the detriment of their studies. She cautioned the students to desist from the unwholesome practice, stressing that culprits would be sanctioned.
The Commissioner, who urged the principals to intensify close monitoring on their students to checkmate the harmful practice, tasked the principals to engage their pupils with assignments on the computers. Dr. Ajayi described teachers as the major stakeholder in the education sector, capable of raising quality children with sound education that could make positive changes in the society, adding that the economy of a state can only improve when the people have access to sound education. She also cautioned both teachers and students from selling the computers as they were not meant to be sold but to be used as working tools.
The Commissioner, who warned the Principals against getting involved in examination malpractices, said that government would not relent effort at clamping down on examination malpractices, adding that anyone caught would be made to face the wrath of the law.
A Samsung Computer Consultant, Mrs. Sola Solako advised the principals to educate the pupils on the side effect of loading too much software on their computers in order to forestall system collapse.
