Monitor Pupils Beyond Classrooms, Adelabu Charges Teachers

Extend your interactions with the pupils beyond the four walls of the classroom and follow them up to ensure they engage in profitable activities at home after school hours, Ekiti Deputy Governor, Prof Modupe Adelabu told teachers yesterday.

She gave the charge while addressing teachers of Ado Grammar School, Ado-Ekiti, during an unscheduled visit to the school.

The deputy governor, who commended the teachers for dressing neatly and for keeping a clean school compound, noted that the school’s result in the last examination conducted by the National Examination Council, (NECO) was commendable but that of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) needed to be improved upon.

According to Prof Adelabu, mass promotion must be discouraged in schools as only the pupils who passed the government unified examination should be promoted and registered for the WAEC and NECO examination to serve as a quality control and guarantee a higher percentage of passes in external examinations.

She also advised teachers to monitor more closely the activities of their pupils and keep them busy both at school and at home with academic works and assignments to reduce the time they have to spend on social media and other distractions.

Stressing the need for the school and the home to synergise for the overall success of the pupils, Adelabu enjoined teachers to endeavour to interact with parents either at school during the “Open Day” or at their different homes on the progress of their wards.

She said: “This (regular interaction) will reduce the bulk of blames that are passed on the teachers as parents would have known the true performance of their children before the final examination.”
She restated government’s commitment to teachers’ welfare; even as she enjoined them to reciprocate the gesture by working harder to enable the administration of Governor Kayode Fayemi achieve its education and human capital development agenda.
The deputy governor also interacted with some pupils in their class where she taught them on how to study for total success and respect elders and teachers as well as the dangers of pre-marital sex and how to escape from being victims of sexual abuse.

Speaking for his colleagues, Mr. James Atoki, thanked the Prof. Adelabu for taking time off her tight schedule to visit the school and for her words of admonition, which according to him, amounted to a brief seminar that will improve their performance.

He also commended the Dr. Fayemi-led administration for making Ekiti schools conducive for teaching and learning and for its welfare packages for teachers.
Mr Atoki promised that the teachers would do their best to ensure that Ekiti schools rank among the best in the country. According to him, teachers in Ekiti will forever be grateful to the administration of governor Fayemi for the efforts it has taken to revamp the state’s education sector.
