Residents of State Housing Estate in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, will in a couple of weeks begin to enjoy asphalted motorable roads as the State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi has disclosed that the Estate internal roads will be ready for use by October.
The Governor who was on inspection of some ongoing projects including the Oba Adejugbe General Hospital and some other road projects at the weekend, gave the assurance that most of the projects embarked upon by his administration including the legacy projects would be commissioned for use before the end of his tenure.
Assuring that the internal road network in the Oke Ila housing estate would be delivered by next month, Governor Fayemi said the roads were neither provided for the Estate during construction nor did previous administrations consider it a priority, he pointed out that the need to give the people living in the estate a new lease of life informed the decision of his administration to effect the construction of the road alongside current road projects..
“The state housing estate road ordinarily ought to have been delivered as part of the services. when you want to start a new housing estate, it is always better for government or the developer to deliver on the roads the way we have done with the Eyi Yato Housing Estate by giving support to the developers in terms of infrastructure development within the estate.
“That’s not what happened in the case of Oke Ila housing estate which has been there for the better part of the existence of Ekiti state. Sadly the roads were never in the consideration of previous governments. That’s why we felt it would be in the interest of the people who live there to have the roads constructed so that it can enhance the value of their property and government can then in turn hold the people who are there accountable for the development that will happen in the estate but we have to do our part as government.”, he said.
While assuring that other 5km roads in local government areas will be delivered in October, the Governor appealed to the Federal Government to reimburse the state government the money it had spent in fixing federal roads within the state.
Governor Fayemi who stressed that his administration is committed to delivering the goods to the people stated that the new Oba Adejugbe General Hospital in Ado, the Ekiti Kete Pavilion as well as other legacy projects including the Government House and Ire Burnt Bricks will also be delivered by next month.
He assured that his government would not abandon any project except those which could not be completed before he leaves office; adding that he expects successive administration to continue with the projects since government is a continuum.
Fayemi said: “We have made promises to the people, we will hold true to our promises and deliver on all the projects. I completed projects that were not even started by me so abandoned projects don’t exist in my dictionary. Government is a continuum. Whatever is left to be done, it is my expectation that the succeeding administrations would also be committed to the people and deliver on those projects. We don’t believe in white elephant projects. We have not started any white elephant projects. All the projects we have embarked upon are those that we have delivered to the people and those that are not yet delivered will be delivered to the people”.
Speaking with journalists during the inspection, one of the contractors handling the Housing internal roads, Engr David Omoya said his company was working to ensure that the roads are delivered as scheduled.
Omoya stressed that all the major earth works and drains have been completed and asphalt works will soon commence.
He added that there won’t be any delay in the work because the Fayemi-led government did not owe his company.
