Mr. Joshua Afolayan, the patient at the centre of the horseshoe kidney surgery case a few months ago, has commended Governor Biodun Oyebanji for facilitating his successful kidney transplant and supporting his recovery process.
Afolayan gave the commendation during a thank-you visit to the State Ministry of Health and Human Services in Ado-Ekiti, where he expressed appreciation to the governor for what he described as a timely and compassionate intervention.
The visibly healthy and emotionally elated Afolayan said the State Government took full responsibility for both the financial and emotional aspects of his treatment.
According to him, the swift intervention of the Oyebanji administration ensured the successful completion of his kidney transplant without further complications, noting that the support not only saved his life but also restored his confidence in the state’s healthcare system.
The State Government had constituted a seven-member investigative panel chaired by Prof. Francis Faduyile following allegations by Afolayan that his kidneys were removed without his consent during surgery.
The panel established that that it was not a case of organ harvesting, but rather a removal of a horseshoe kidney.
The government had promised to support the full cost of Afolayan’s kidney transplant, including post-transplant care and related medical maintenance for two years.
Responding during the visit, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Oyebanji Filani, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to protecting patients’ rights, promoting ethical medical practice, and restoring public confidence in the health sector.
Filani, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Olusola Gbenga-Igotun, said the government would continue to strengthen healthcare delivery through accountability, compassion, and responsible governance.
He also urged residents to continue patronising public health facilities and to embrace positive health-seeking behaviour.
