The Ekiti State House of Assembly has passed the State Harmonised Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection) Law, making Ekiti the first sub-national government in Nigeria to domesticate the law ahead of the 2026 fiscal year, when the revised approved list is scheduled to take effect.
The law is expected to be signed into force by Governor Biodun Oyebanji alongside the 2025 Budget on December 23.
The State Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun, who disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Ado-Ekiti, described the development as a major milestone in the State’s efforts to promote transparency, order, and fairness in revenue administration, noting that the achievement also reflects Governor Oyebanji’s unwavering commitment to fiscal discipline, institutional reforms, and the creation of a business-friendly environment.
“We are deeply grateful to His Excellency for keeping faith with the people of Ekiti State. This achievement once again underscores his steadfast commitment to fiscal discipline, institutional reforms, and a business-friendly environment,” Olatunbosun said.
He commended the Ekiti State House of Assembly for its diligence and cooperation, while also applauding the Chairman of the Ekiti State Internal Revenue Service (EKIRS), Mr. Olaniran Olatona, and the entire management team of the Service for their tireless efforts in ensuring the successful passage of the law.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the State Government’s readiness to ensure the smooth and effective implementation of the law for the benefit of government, businesses, and citizens, noting that it will further strengthen trust, fairness, and accountability in revenue administration.
Meanwhile, the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) has formally commended Ekiti State for the landmark achievement. In a statement, the Executive Secretary of the Board, Mr. Olusegun Adesokan, described the passage of the law as historic, noting that Ekiti State has once again distinguished itself as the first state in Nigeria to pass the Harmonised Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection) Law ahead of the 2026 fiscal year.
According to the JRB, the law provides a clear and uniform framework for tax administration in Ekiti State, eliminates multiple taxation, curbs unauthorized collections by both state and non-state actors, plugs revenue leakages, and significantly improves the ease of doing business.
The Board added that the development aligns with the ongoing fiscal policy and tax reforms being championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It praised the coordinated efforts of the Executive Arm of Government, the Ekiti State House of Assembly, and the Ekiti State Internal Revenue Service, while also specially commending Governor Oyebanji for fulfilling the pledge he made in October 2025 during the commissioning of the Ekiti State Revenue House in Ado-Ekiti, an effort that culminated in the passage of the law.
