The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has commended the Ekiti State Government for its preparedness in transitioning the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format with the obvious effort to improve exam integrity and provision of conducive environment for digital literacy.

The Branch Controller of WAEC in Ekiti State, Mr. Amos Dogari who gave the commendation in Ado Ekiti during an advocacy visit to the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Olabimpe Aderiye, lauded government’s proactive efforts in preparing for the new system, adding that not only is the State not indebted to WAEC in any form, the obvious upgrade of ICT facilities in its public schools will help in ensuring that both students and teachers are prepared for the new system.

Describing the meeting as highly productive, Mr. Dogari said that the deliberation was necessary to discuss the modalities for the planned migration to CB WASSCE towards achieving the desired goals.

He assured that sensitization programmes would be conducted across the three senatorial districts in the state to enlighten stakeholders, including students, teachers, and parents, on the new process to encourage informed actions, reduce possible conflict, and achieve an environment where individuals and groups feel personally invested in and accountable for achieving desired results.

Explaining that the WAEC WASSCE CBT format is a hybrid model where multiple-choice (objective) questions are answered on-screen, while essay and practical questions are displayed on-screen and answered in provided paper booklets, Dogari said it was primarily aimed at modernizing and streamlining the examination process, offering faster result processing, improved efficiency, enhanced security against malpractice, and better adaptability to technological advancements.

In her remarks, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Olabimpe Aderiye who assured that all public secondary schools in the State have been equipped with laptops, reiterated the State Government’s commitment to technological advancement in its schools, adding that existing facilities could be utilized in transitioning to CB WASSCE in the state.
