…says we remain committed to you

ADO-EKITI | MAY 1, 2021 – Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has congratulated workers in the state on occasion of this year’s Workers’ Day celebrations.

The Governor said May Day offers an opportunity to celebrate workers and highlight their importance in the government’s efforts to positively impact the lives of the citizenry.

“Workers’ contribution to the socio-economic development of the state and the country at large cannot be overemphasized. Our work force has demonstrated professionalism, diligence, and commitment as critical partners in the implementation of the administration’s five-pillar development agenda.”, said Fayemi. “We thank them for their service and assure them of our commitment to their welfare and professional development.”, he added.

Speaking on the theme of this year’s May Day celebration, *”COVID-19 Pandemic, Social and Economic Crisis: Challenges for Jobs, Social Protection and People’s Welfare,”* Governor Fayemi assured that despite the harsh economic climate, he remains resolute in his commitment to ensuring better welfare and a more conducive working environment for Ekiti workers and making necessary sacrifices to achieve this. The Governor recalled that political office holders in the state including himself and top civil servants made sacrifices including taking pay cuts during the lockdown that was instituted at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic last year.

Workers across the state were exempt from making this sacrifice, and the state kept its commitment to workers’ salaries and retirees’ pensions regularly, as has become tradition in the state since his assumption of office – a welcome departure from what obtained in previous administrations, and what currently obtains in some other sister states across the country. New workers were also recruited to inject fresh blood into the system.

Fayemi praised the workers, giving special recognition to healthcare and other frontline workers who are the bulwark of the state’s defence against the COVID-19 pandemic. He thanked them for their continuing efforts to mitigate the impact of the pandemic in the state at the risk of their own safety and wellbeing.

The Governor pointed out that though COVID-19 and other macro-economic factors have impacted the state’s accruals from the Federation Account and its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), his administration would continue to accord workers’ welfare a priority when making difficult choices on areas of the state’s expenditure profile to cut down on to accommodate the anticipated deficits.

He further stressed that his administration was conscious of the demands of Organised Labour which he said are being looked into and would be implemented as the state’s economic situation improves.
