The Government of Ekiti State on Monday disbursed the sum of N26.450 million as medical support to some ailing indigent citizens of the State, in line with the administration’s support for the less privileged.

The Wife of the Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi who spoke at the event held at the Oba Adejugbe Hospital, Ado- Ekiti, appealed to citizens of the state to key into the State Health Insurance Scheme (SHIS), to reduce the rate of sicknesses and deaths, especially among categorised as indigent.

Erelu Fayemi said the administration of Governor Kayode Fayemi would continue to perceive the citizens as the greatest investment to be prioritised in the government’s policies and programmes.

She said: “Governor Fayemi has always said the people of the state are the greatest assets of his government and that government must invest in their health and general wellbeing.

If you have health, you have wealth and everything, that was why this government has been supporting citizens of the state to get treatments at home and abroad.

“It is important for us to do this to support our people. I want to reiterate that at the appropriate time, our people must take advantage of the SHIS, so help us tell the people to key into it.

“If you are living without sound health, everything is irrelevant. Money can fail at times. Go for medical check-ups regularly, so that we can remain fit and sound.

“Another significant area to us is these special people, who don’t have the capacities to take care of their medical challenges, either because the amount involved is overwhelming or they cannot just afford it.

This government has always taken care of such people and will continue to do so.

“Today, I have been given the honour to present these cheques totalling N26.450m to 17 beneficiaries to take care of their health challenges. This is part of what this government can do to restore their health to normal because health is wealth”

.

Commenting on the increasing number of casualties being recorded in the second wave of the Covid 19 pandemic, Erelu Fayemi advised Ekiti indigenes to be wary of the deadly Coronavirus and observe all safety protocols.

She said the pandemic is real and spreading more in a terrific fashion globally.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, said no efforts will be spared to ensure the development of the health sector in the state, with a special focus on human capital development.

“Nothing speaks more of the governor’s commitment than helping the sick. Recently, the government-provided 187 solar power in our hospitals to improve healthcare delivery.

“Today, we are distributing this money to 17 persons for them to receive quality healthcare delivery. I want the beneficiaries to direct the resources to their health.

One of the beneficiaries, Prof Adefolaju Oluwatoyin, thanked the State Government for supporting them, emphasizing that the money will go a long way in solving their medical challenges.

“I feel glad for what the government has done for us. This is unique. Most of us are poverty-stricken, and this money will help us” he said.

Another beneficiary, Akinyemi Taye, said the money was timely adding that it is proof that the government is for the people. He pledged his support for this administration and implored others to support the government.
