Ekiti State Law Reform Commission

The key activities or functions of the commission as stated under the enabling laws include but not limited to the following:

(A)  The major Business or Mandate of the Ekiti State Law Reform Commission is to keep under review all Laws of Ekiti State with a view to their systematic development and reform in consonance with the prevailing norms of the Ekiti State Society.

(B)  To keep under review all Laws of Ekiti State and recommend its reform to ensure among other things:-

•  That the Law conforms to the letter and spirit of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended;
•  That the Law systematically develops in consonance with the values and principles enshrined in the constitution;
•  That the Law is, among others, consistent, harmonized, just, simple, accessible, modern and cost effective in application;
• That then public are informed of review or proposed review of any Law; and
• Keep an updated database of all Laws passed and reviewed or amended by the Ekiti State House of Assembly.

(C)    To provide advice, technical assistance and information to the Ekiti State Government and its agencies with regards to the reform or amendment of any branch of the Law.

(D)   To consult and collaborate with the State and non-state organs, department or agencies in the formulation of legislation to give effect to the social, economic and political policies of the government.

(E)    To formulate, by means of draft Bills or otherwise, any proposal for reform of State or Local Government Legislation.

In line with the above provision of the Law the Ekiti Law Reform Commission, with the approval of the State Governor has since commenced the process of reviewing all the Laws of the State. The process is nearing completion. The public hearing on the reviewed Laws has been held. The stakeholder workshop on the reviewed Laws for the stakeholders to make their input has also been held. What remains is for the reviewed Laws to be presented to the State Executive Council for their Exco approval and thereafter to the State House of Assembly for their legislative processes and passage into law. Thereafter the reviewed laws will be printed and published as the Second Edition Laws of Ekiti State.
