EKITI STATE SMALL TOWNS, RURAL WATER SUPPLY, SANITATION AND HYGIENE AGENCY
Ekiti State Small Towns, Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Agency was formally known as Water and Sanitation Project (WATSAN) established 1996 and later transformed into Ekiti State Rural Water and Sanitation Agency (EKRUWASSA) in 2010.
EKRUWASSA later metamorphosed to Ekiti State Small Towns, Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Agency in 2021 by the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Law of 2021
Mission
- To increase access of rural and small towns to safe drinking water
- To promote good hygiene practices in communities, primary and secondary schools to enhance healthy living
- To mobilize or facilitate communities to end completely open defecation and maintain healthy environment using Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS)
- To increase access to improved sanitation and hygiene facilities for healthy living
- To improve quality of rural and small towns dwellers through the provision of sustainable potable water and encourage them to own and use sanitation facilities
To improve the quality of life of rural and small town dwellers by the provision of sustainable potable water through borehole development, small water schemes, and encourage them to own and use improved sanitation facilities to achieve Open Defecation Free status
- To increase access to safe drinking water through construction of boreholes and small water schemes including spring development
- To increase access to improved sanitation and hygiene services through construction of sanitation and hygiene facilities
- To ensure rural communities and Small Towns in Ekiti attain Open Defecation Free status
- To exhibit efficient, diligent and transparent service delivery to rural and small town dwellers in the area of water and sanitation and hygiene facilities.
- Developing a sustainable service delivery mechanism for the provision of potable water supply in small towns and rural communities through underground water schemes and spring development
- Developing a sustainable service delivery mechanism for the provision of safe sanitation services in small towns and rural communities
- Accelerating coverage of State water supply and sanitation in small towns and rural communities
- Improving public health by building and promotion of sanitation demonstration units and sanitation centers in each towns to inculcate best practices
- Training builders in the construction of sanitation facilities for further sanitation and Hygiene promotion in the towns
- Assisting LGAs to take inventory of existing rural water, sanitation and hygiene facilities; rehabilitation and improvement of existing schemes
- It is responsible for the formation and training of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Committees (WASHCOMs) and Water Consumer Associations (WCA)
- The Agency is responsible for the propagation of Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) and sanitation Center formation
- It encourages the formation of Health Clubs in schools and train teachers on puberty hygiene, hygiene promotion etc.
- The Agency partners with donors Agencies like, WaterAid Nigeria, Unicef, Federal Government etc. for water, sanitation and service delivery
- The Agency is the State co-ordinator for the Clean Nigeria Campaign – use the toilet
- The Agency is the State Borehole Driller.
- EKSTRUWASHA supervises all boreholes drilled in the State.

The Agency is made up of 47 members of Staff with 25 male and 22 female
- Over 1000 handpump boreholes constructed
- Over 1500 hand pump boreholes rehabilitated
- Over 500 handpump boreholes upgraded to solar powered boreholes
- over 1000 solar powered boreholes constructed
- Over 100 public sanitation facilities constructed
- Numerous hygiene facilities provided
- Sustained awareness campaign on need for each household to have toilets and hygiene facilities
- Award and commencement of the construction and reticulation of a 2.57 million liters per day Odo Oja Water Supply Scheme that is projected to serve over 30,000 people in Ikere Ekiti in the first phase
- Award of the upgrading and completion of Iyin Water Supply Scheme that is orojected to serve ovr 5,000 people
- Award of the rehabilitation and upgrading of Erijiyan/ Ikogosi Water Supply Scheme
- Construction of 110 Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities in 55 schools and Health centers in all the 38 LGAs/LCDAs in Ekiti State
