The Special Adviser to the Ekiti State Governor on Security Matters, Brigadier General Ebenezer Ogundana (rtd.), has called on residents of the State to ignore the recent rumor and false alarm of planned attacks in tertiary institutions and border communities and go about their lawful activities without fear of harassment or intimidation from any quarter.
Speaking on the audience-participatory simulcast programme Ekiti Loni/Ekiti Today, Brigadier General Ogundana assured that security operatives had investigated recent rumours of planned attacks in tertiary institutions and border communities and found them to be false and capable of causing unnecessary panic.
Stressing that Ekiti remains one of the safest States in Nigeria, Ogundana urged residents to remain calm and continue their daily activities without fear.
“We have visited the institutions mentioned in these viral messages—there is no threat,” he said. “People must understand that these rumours are deliberately fabricated to create fear, especially as we enter the festive season”, he assured.
He also assured residents that the State’s proximity to Kwara and Kogi does not pose a threat, as the borders are well-secured with military and police presence, stressing that the State’s surveillance network remains strong, coordinated, and fully operational.
Ogundana however emphasized the importance of public cooperation and intelligence-sharing in maintaining security, urging residents to promptly report any suspicious activity.
“Whatever information you receive, do not panic—bring it to the security agencies. We are here to guide and protect you,” he advised.
In his remarks on the programme, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information, Rt. Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun, attributed the prevailing peace and security in the State to its multi-layered security architecture, as well as its developmental policies, programmes, and interventions strategically designed to safeguard lives and property across all communities.
Rt. Hon. Olatunbosun explained that the State has been working closely with all security agencies, including military and paramilitary formations, alongside traditional rulers, local government security councils, community vigilance groups, and technology-driven surveillance systems through strengthened inter-agency collaboration.
He highlighted that the ongoing extension of electricity, provision of transformers to underserved areas, and installation of solar-powered streetlights, particularly along major roads, were part of deliberate efforts to enhance safety.
Stressing that the State’s huge investment in agriculture, with over 5,000 hectares of land cleared for large-scale farming, is also strategically tied to security, adding that the aim is to reduce desperation, curb illegal activities, and create jobs through economic empowerment.
“There is no local government in Ekiti where this administration has not supplied transformers or solar streetlights,” he said. “These installations improve visibility, deter criminal elements, and help our people go about their daily activities safely.”
He added that many previously dense forests that could serve as criminal hideouts have been cleared for farming, while the massive road construction efforts across the State have improved the road network and enhanced security by exposing potential hideouts and reducing opportunities for criminal activity.
“Security is not only about guns and uniforms. Once roads are accessible and bushes are cleared, the environment becomes safer for everyone,” he said.
Olatunbosun urged residents to carry on with their lawful activities without fear, but cautioned against spreading false or alarming information. He warned that sharing unverified messages and videos could trigger panic and potentially lead to loss of lives and property. He emphasized the need to report all suspicious or disturbing information to relevant security agencies for swift and decisive action.
