The Ekiti State Government has approved the payment of the 50 percent counterpart funding required to enable the State Government insure farmers in the State against unforeseen risks and

climate related issues following the huge losses suffered by farmers as a result of climate change related issues last year.

This development reaffirms the strategic role the State is advancing with the National Food Security Strategy under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which places agriculture at the forefront of Nigeria’s economic revitalization efforts.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr Ebenezer Boluwade who made this known in a statement in Ado-Ekiti stressed that with the payment of the counterpart funds, Ekiti farmers will participate and benefit from “The Africa 10 Million Climate – Resilient Farmers Initiative for 2025 Wet Season Farming” being coordinated by the Presidential Food System Coordinating Unit (PFSCU) through the Office of the Vice President.

The Matching Fund according to him is designed to provide succour for the farmers in the face of climate uncertainties, and anticipated shocks as forecasted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) for 2025 Wet Season.

The Commissioner explained that the Insurance Scheme tagged “Area Yield Insurance Cover” under the Insurance Consortium being championed by the Leadway Insurance and PULA Advisors, is structured to assist farmers to mitigate against risks such as drought, flood, excessive heat, windstorm, pest and disease.

He stated that under the initiative, farmers are insured against a pre-set historical benchmark, which is calibrated from historical yields and is known as the Average Production History (APH explaining that the APH is defined as a benchmark yield stated in the contract and is applied to determine if there are any payouts.

The Commissioner stressed that “as a leading food-producing state with vast arable land and a committed farming population, Ekiti State is intensifying its support for agricultural development through bold and people-centered interventions that directly benefit farmers and agro-entrepreneurs.

He noted that this laudable intervention aligns perfectly with the Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji administration’s shared prosperity agenda. In line with this vision, the state has rolled out a series of targeted subsidy programmes designed to boost food production, reduce input costs, and encourage mechanized farming.

The Commissioner stated that: the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security hereby calls all the hardworking and resilient

farmers across the state to take advantage of this window of opportunity by adhering strictly to good agricultural practices and adopt climate smart practices as Government has taken an audacious step to mitigate both known and unforeseen risks in the current farming season.
