Why Teachers Development Needs Assessment (TDNA)?

April 27, 2012

  •  It is a policy of the State government – Not limited to Teachers
  • It’s best practice all over the world
  • Normal process for teacher recruitment and annual practice license in the developed/developing world
  • It’s the duty of an employer to check for competency and general assessment from time to time
  •  It is the norm in the Federal Civil Service
  • It will offer us the opportunity for strategic training and capacity building
  • Mass failure of students. (20% effective credits in 2010 and 27% effective credits in 2011 WAEC in Ekiti State, only 3 people scored 300 and above in 2012 JAMB out of 1500000 nationwide)
  • To prescribe an appropriate treatment, we need to have a proper diagnosis (WE NEED TO KNOW WHERE WE ARE TO REACH WHERE WE ARE GOING). We need to define our baseline.
  • The failure rate of our pupils, students and the quality of graduates is a compelling reason for TDNA
  • To improve the quality of education and standard generally –> improved learning outcomes
  • To reward excellence and sift out those who are promotable. There is no automatic promotion of staff or students in Ekiti State.
  • To reward high performance and TDNA would be used  for the purposes of mentoring, curriculum development and representations at events and competitions
  • It allows for proper bench marking within the state and outside. Ironically, Mr. Governor just received a letter from FME requesting us to submit the name of 10 Schools within the state to do TDNA. It will also be done in the 36 states of the federation from May 7-11, 2012.
  • It will assist with planning and future recruitment of teachers
  • Used as a basis for advising Universities and Colleges of Education about pre-service training needs

Modalities for Teachers Development Needs Assessment (TDNA)

  • —  Assessment will be on general knowledge, basic Mathematics, basic use of English, Knowledge of curriculum taught and methodology.
  • —  Assessment will hold on a date to be announced in May, 2012 @ LGAs simultaneously
  • —  Assessment will be done with coded numbers and the scripts will be assessed through conference marking.
  • —  It has been done in Kwara, Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa and Oyo state. Ekiti is not an exception. Ironically, the pilot testing that was eventually used for Kwara in 2008 was conducted in Ekiti
  • —  It is not meant to humiliate or frustrate Teachers
