March 23, 2012

L-R: Special Adviser to Ekiti State Governor on Infrastructure and Utilities, Mr. Kayode Jegede; Governor Kayode Fayemi; and World Bank Country Director, Nigeria, Ms. Marie-Francoise Marie-Nelly, during the water consultative forum, in Ado-Ekiti... on Thursday.

As Nigeria joins her counterparts  to mark the ‘ World Water Day’, the Ekiti state government says it is committing N3.2 billion into the provision of water and sanitation in the state this year.

The state Governor Kayode Fayemi, who disclosed this in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, at a stakeholders’ consultative forum on the proposed state’s water supply and sanitation policy, also said that his administration released over N100m towards sanitation facilities in 2011.
While appreciating the challenges facing his administration to improving water supply and sanitation, the governor said his
administration was working towards improving the existing potable water schemes and construction of new ones across the state.
Governor Fayemi said his administration was developing a permanent and sustainable solution to the challenges facing the
sector.
He said his government was also engaging some development partners such as the World Bank; European Union and the AFDB in collaborative initiative to rehabilitate the high grade water schemes in the state.
The Director of Justice Development and Peace Initiative (JDPI) of the Catholic diocese of Ekiti, Rev. Fr. Raphael Borisade, in an interview with journalists, commended the state government for its plans to improve water supply and sanitation in the state but warned that the programmes should be well implemented to ensure adequate provision of water.
In his opening remarks, the Special Adviser, Bureau of Infrastructures and Public Utilities to the governor, Mr. Kayode Jegede, said the two-day stakeholders’ forum would afford the stakeholders the opportunity to discuss government’s policy on water supply and
sanitation in the state.
He recalled that government in its efforts to laying a solid foundation for adequate water supply and improved sanitation engaged
some experts to facilitate development of water supply and sanitation policy.
