Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has rewarded SUBEB Model Nursery and Primary School, Ado Ekiti with cash and other gift items for doing the State proud by emerging the best primary school in Nigeria in the last President’s Teachers and Schools Excellence Award.
Also rewarded were Principal of Aramoko District Commercial Junior Secondary School, Mr. Fayode Elijah who emerged the Best Administrator for Junior School in 2011; Mr. Ajayi Michael of Community Senior High School, Osin, as the Best Senior Secondary School Teacher, Mrs. Ayemi Bolanle of AUD High School, Ikere as the Best Junior Secondary School Teacher.
Mr Agboola Olalekan of Methodist Pilot Primary School, Ilupeju Ekiti, a the Best Primary School Teacher for the year, while Aramoko District Commercial Junior Secondary School, Aramoko was the best Junior Secondary School.
Others who got the award for 2012 are Mr. Oluwafemi Julius (Best Secondary School Administrator), Mr Adeoye Zacchaues (Best Primary School Administrator), Mr Ayeni Segun, Best Secondary School Teacher, while Mrs Rachael Oluwafemi was Best Primary School Teacher of the year.
The event was witnessed by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Dr Eniola Ajayi, Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Hon Funminiyi Afuye and Chairperson , State’s Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) , Prof Dupe Adelabu and top officials of the Education ministry.
Presenting the rewards, the Governor said his administration will always celebrate people who excel in their various fields especially those whose contributions will leave indelible marks on the progress of the State.
Dr. Fayemi added that as much as his administration would reward excellence, it will not shy away from the fact that students’ performances in public examinations are still poor.
He stated that all the education policies of his administration are outcomes of the Education Summit held last year and they are not targeted at witch-hunting teachers but to enhance the productivity of all and sundry in the sector.
The Governor added that despite the meagre resources that accrue to the state, his administration has renovated 100 public secondary schools to the tune of N 2.5 billion, procured special computers for the School for the Blind in Ikere, instructional materials for three special schools at Ikere, Ido and Ikoro, procurement of laptops for secondary school students and payment of WASSCE fees among others.
All these, according to him, are to enhance the education system in the state.
Dr. Fayemi stressed that the state government frowns on examination malpractice and any teacher or schools caught in the fraudulent act will be clamped down on while all illegal schools and miracle centres will be closed down.
He however called on all stakeholders in the state to rise up to the task of reviving the sector so that it may live up to expectations.
The highly elated teachers, accompanied to the event by some of their students, lauded the administration’s huge investment in the education sector , and pledged to ensure that the standard of education in the state’s public schools improves in line with the vision of the administration.
