Ekiti Government Commiserates With Victims Of Rainstorm Disaster

Succor is underway for victims of the rainstorm that destroyed public utilities and private homes in some parts of Ekiti State on Sunday evening, it was learnt yesterday.
Already, the government through the Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency (EKSEMA) has been mandated to take the census of properties that were destroyed by the rainstorm.
The Deputy Governor, Prof Modupe Adelabu gave the assurance when she went round Ado-Ekiti, the state capital for on-the-spot assessments of affected properties, which included private residences, schools and public buildings.
Mrs. Adelabu, who expressed her surprise at the magnitude of the damage, noted that there was little or nothing anybody or the government could do to prevent such natural disaster other than to take some preventive measures like ensuring that structures are not built on water path.
She advised house owners to renovate their houses and refrain from the use of quacks and substandard building materials.
The deputy governor also urged contractors and bricklayers to involve civil engineers at the planning stage of their new buildings for quality assurance to prevent collapse.
Some of the places badly affected include:  the multi-purpose hall renovated by the government at Ola-Oluwa Muslim Grammar School, Ado-Ekiti and electricity poles that were felled by the storm.
She said the government has directed EKSEMA officials to go round and compile a list of victims with a view to ascertaining the damage and fashion out ways of cushioning the effects.
